Reigning VGMA rapper of the year Medikal adds his voice to the ever topical issue of racism on scathing freestyle dubbed “I’m Not Blank I’m Black“.
The powerful and thought-provoking composition is in two parts. The track opens on a rather somber and reflective note with the rapper struggling to find answers to his own questions: “Is it because I’m black? Is it because I’ve got nappy hair? // Maybe it’s because my chain is expensive, let’s be clear.//
The lyricist then proceeds to hit on cliches and time-worn negative narratives fostered by misinformation and bias against black people and does a brilliant job setting the record straight.
The second part takes things up a notch as the instrumental switches to a hard-hitting grimy beat. Here, Medikal flexes his story-telling skills, vividly narrating a past experience of racism he suffered at the hands of the Amsterdam police. The second part, I must say, finally brings the entire concept of the video home.
It’s nice to hear a song call a spade a spade.
