Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist Delips Apo steps into a fresh chapter with ‘Romeo and Juliet’, an expansive album that blends infectious Afro-pop rhythms with contemporary African sounds.
The project is a reflection of an artist who has spent decades allowing music to evolve with him.
Created in his recording studio in Accra, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ brings together the rhythmic energy of African music with modern production, showcasing Delips Apo’s instinct for melody, instrumentation, and experimentation.
At the heart of the album is “Somemu Yie”, a lively dancehall-driven record performed in Twi.
Its message is simple but relatable: when you take someone you love for granted, you risk losing them.
Yet rather than delivering that warning solemnly, Delips Apo wraps it in an infectious groove built from drums, bass lines, synth riffs, organ, percussion and layered keyboard rhythms giving the album a track designed to get listeners moving.
But ‘Romeo and Juliet represents more than one song.
It captures the creative range of a musician who plays keyboards and guitar and is proficient across numerous instruments.
Delips Apo’s musical vocabulary stretches across highlife, funk, soul, Latin, zouk, blues, reggae, rock, dancehall, traditional music and world music, with his contemporary work combining African and Western rhythms with atmospheric synth textures.
His journey began at 16 and has taken him through more than 15 bands, international performances and releases that have found audiences across Africa and Europe.
Now, with ‘Romeo and Juliet’, he brings that wealth of experience into a new era, working with Ditto on the album’s promotion and opening his extensive catalogue to new listeners.
