Unorthodox Reviews took time out to appreciate the women in the Ghanaian music space in honor of International Women’s Day. Here is our list of the Best Female Artists In Ghana.
EFYA
Jane Fauzzier Awindor known as Efya in her music life is the biggest female act in Ghana right now. Winning the Female Vocal Performer at Ghana Music Awards in four successions, beginning in 2011. She has graced stages in Ghana, Africa and beyond and has placed Ghana on the map when it comes to world music. Efya is said to working on her EP which should be released later this year. We can only expect a sequel of the fire she left us with on Janesis.
BECCA
Talk of Becca and our minds are being drawn to “Daa ke Daa”. Rebecca Akosua Acheampong renowned Becca as singer-songwriter falls under the genre of high life, RnB, and Afro-pop. The one thing that makes her stand out is the sensual voice that will leave you obsessed with her. She has sustained her music career through her consistency in performing on every event stage and hosting the Girl Talk Show. Currently signed to one of the biggest labels in Ghana, we can only expect to see more of her.
MZVEE
Arguably, the Queen of Ghanaian dancehall, MzVee is an Afro-pop, Hip-life, Dancehall and RnB artiste. You are more likely to notice her presence on a record from her fondness for using catchy phrases in her lyrics which makes her songs last long on your music playlist. The songstress has gotten way better after her “Natural Girl” single with more thrilling music to her fans, the tip-toers. Can’t-do away with her simplicity and love for the Ghanaian culture!
ADOMAA
The sensational singer we now know as Adomaa was born as Joy Onyinyechukwu Adomaa Serwaa Adjeman to a Ghanaian father and Nigerian mother. She won the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards Unsung Artiste in 2016, confirming her status as one of the brightest young talents in Ghana at the moment. Adomaa’s versatility is profound on her EP, Afraba. A project that sends you into her state of mind through relentless burrow over Soul, Jazz, and Afro beats chords.
ADINA
Adina Thembi Ndamse! Known by stage name Adina is a Ghanaian-South African singer, songwriter, actress and sometimes a model. She was the winner of the music reality show Stars of the Future in 2008. A versatile artist who has featured acts like Sarkodie and made a name for herself! One time Record of the Year and Best Female Vocalist of the Year award winner of Ghana Music Awards for her single “Too Late“.
WIYAALA
“The young lioness of Africa”, Wiyaala is an Afro-pop singer-songwriter who embraces the rich culture of Ghana. Singing in Sissala, she has carved a name as the only woman in the world singing in the language. It is extremely difficult to categorize Wiyaala’s genre because she is so damn multi-talented and makes music across the border. In simple language, she knows how to thrill her fans.
CINA SOUL
Queen of Mashups, Cina Soul (Christie Quincyna Quarcoopome) is a soul singer and a finalist in the Vodafone Music Icon talent show. She has opened shows for popular Ghanaian artists including M.anifest and Efya. With one EP (Metanoia) to her credit, her current record, 00:01 which featured Ghanaian rap act RJZ only leaves us in anticipation of what creative depth the singer is willing to take us.
NANA YAA
Nanayaa was born in Ghana but has had life experiences across different parts of the World, ranging from Liberia, London, and the USA. Her first single “E GO Be’ under 6 months of release was nominated for the 2016 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards for Best Female Vocalist of the year category. Her debut album, which she recorded with producer, songwriter and singer Kwame Yeboah and Genius Selection is supposedly scheduled for release by the end of the year.
YAA YAA
Starting her career as Bertha, auditioning and winning ‘Stars of the Future’ in 2009, Record Label Owner and Singer, Yaa Yaa‘s first two singles were; ‘Am I‘ featuring Sarkodie, then ‘Incredible’ written by Chase. Followed with a feature on a song by Okyeame Kwame “Faithful” which shot her to fame. Yaa Yaa boasts of a diverse vocal range but settles within the genres of Soul, R&B, and Highlife music.
AMAARAE
Born in New York and raised between Atlanta and Accra, the 24-year-old singer, songwriter, producer and engineer, Amaarae is an artist who describes herself and her sound as an eclectic blend of bold, yet sexy lyricism and longing vulnerable melodies. Her recent, Passion Fruit Summers EP was well received by the public and has shot her further into an enduring, steady rise into the spotlight.
RIA BOSS
Trust Ria Boss to Find Your Free. Born in London. Raised in Gabon and Ghana. Singer-songwriter Ria Boss has been all over. Through her vulnerable songwriting and dreamy, soulful vocals, she’s finally finding her place – and herself – through music. Recently producing and working on a three-track EP on her own, She continues to stretch herself and prove her versatility to us on a project she called the “lo-fi experiments vol 1”.
