On Wednesday 19th September, the yoyo tinz team put out dates and the official poster for their very first yoyo tinz festival. The hip hop festival will be held in Accra, exactly 2 months from now, from Monday 19th to Sunday 25th November 2018.
Yoyo tinz, is a Ghanaian organization that aims at developing, archiving and documenting African hip hop culture. Famous for its ‘yoyo tinz shrine’, which has been consistent over the years with being among the biggest and liveliest stations at the annual Chale Wote festival, the organization is here this time with its own festival. The yoyo tinz festival, will highlight the various elements of hip hop culture – rap, graffiti, beatboxing, breakdancing, DJing. Numerous exciting and informative activities have also been planned: panel discussions, activities for kids, film screening, exhibition, etc.
The colorful yet simple poster design is a result of the work of illustrator Bright Ackwerh (for the Goat mascot) and yoyo tinz’ in-house designers Eli Quist and Addis Ababa Ackwerh.
Why a goat as a hip hop festival mascot? Because among other enviable attributes, goats symbolize determination, stubbornness, and vitality, elements that are fully embedded in the hip hop culture. Moreover, many rappers have claimed to be the G.O.A.T; the Greatest Of All Times! And lastly, because the goat has in recent years become a popular symbol in Ghanaian politics – the former president engendering the ‘dead goat syndrome,’ and the goat becoming a widely known, seemingly official bribe item.
