Kayso is undoubtedly one of the most accomplished young producers in the Ghanaian music industry.
Although we’ve heard him sing/rap on a couple of tunes here and there, he’s never really been held on the same pedestal as a recording artist. Kayso attempts to change the status quo with Your Type No Dey.
“Your Type No Dey represents growth for me. For a while, I have been producing music for so many artists which has been a good ride but I decided to introduce to the world a different side of me which I felt was not being shown. I can also sing, and I love music that’s chill and energetic at the same time.”
Having worked with the likes of Ayat, Kwesi Arthur, Dex Kwasi, Stonebwoy, and Sarkodie amongst an impressive catalog of both mainstream and upcoming acts over the years, most music lovers expected the EP to border on mainstream genres i.e. hip hop and afro-beats. We were all in for a pleasant surprise! I personally reviewed my expectations after hearing the first single off the EP which doubles as the title single.
‘This EP came about when I first made the song Your Type No Dey at Ground Up Studios in Tema, it’s an afro-electronic song where I was singing about some girls I have come across in my life and how they are special. I performed for few people last year and the response was overwhelming. So I decided to take a whole project inspired by my interactions with people, the way of life of people around me and Ghana as a whole, over beats that have that fresh afro-electronic vibe.’
In two words, I would describe the 5 track EP as ‘refreshingly alternative’. Other songs such as Can’t Let Go, Go Gaga, Feeling Right and Upgrade You embody elements of electronic, afro-beats and house genres.
With this EP Kayso has not only made a statement but has also successfully carved an inimitable identity for himself as a recording artist. Your Type No Dey, which is pidgin for ‘you are unique’, is truly one of a kind.
