Twitter Reacts to Burna Boy Describing his Music as ‘Afrofusion’ and not ‘Afrobeats’

Burna Boy

Prolific Nigerian musician Burna Boy sheds light on the reason for describing his style of music as ‘Afrofusion’ and not ‘Afrobeats’.

Although this is not the first time the Grammy-award winner has made this statement, online music enthusiasts and critics appear to be shocked it.

On the latest episode of the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, the African giant stated that his style of music is Afrofusion and not Afrobeats. He backed his statement by saying, “for me, it’s like the same way you’re not going to say Nas is an R&B singer because he’s from America or Whitney Houston was a rapper because rap is the most popping thing now… I can’t accept that because I’m not a rapper”.

He further added, “We have Highlife, Juju music, Fuji music, South African Kwaito music, Amapiano, Afropop, we have all types of genres in Africa. To be really sincere, for you to just call everything Afrobeats is kind of a disservice to the artistes. For me, when I started the Afrofusion thing, it was like my music was not the same as anything that was out. It was like everybody else kind of sounded the same… so I just decided that I’ll call my music Afrofusion because it’s a fusion of everything.”

In related news, Burna Boy just dropped the album cover of his highly anticipated sixth studio album ‘Love, Damini’. The album is scheduled to drop on July 8, 2022.
