Don Jazzy on Why He Did Not Sign Davido or Wizkid

Don Jazzy

Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, producer, and record label founder Don Jazzy has amassed an enviable profile for himself on both the Nigerian and global markets.

From megastars like Rema, Ayra Starr, and more signed to his record label Mavins, you’ll probably be wondering why stars like Davido and Wizkid are not on his record label.

Don Jazzy nourishes and builds young talents. At the same time Wizkid and Davido had just started their music career, he founded the record label Mo’ Hits Records with D’Banj in 2006 to help out new talents.

The question now is why did he not build his current empire with the then-new talents Davido and Wizkid. In a recent in-depth podcast interview with Nigerian YouTuber Fisayo Fosudo, he revealed the reason why.

“With Wizkid, it was a case of not getting to him fast enough,” Don Jazzy reveals. “Wizkid, obviously, I could not (sign), because Banky got to him first. That would have been amazing,” he said.

With Davido, he initially wanted to but then realized Davido was going to do well in the music industry without him. He felt Davido did not really need his help. Apart from Wizkid and Davido he took a liking to other artistes but did not sign too.

“There are plenty of artistes I wish I could have signed. I like Simi. I did not sign but I wish I did. I like Teni. I had the opportunity for David, obviously. But I kinda figured that he will be fine. Again, Falz. I love his work. We almost actually had a deal but it did not work out.”

Don Jazzy further revealed he spends a whooping 50-100 million Naira a year on a new artiste he signs to actually get somewhere in the industry with them. It’s a whole lot involved and he cannot just jump to sign anyone he likes.

Do you think Don Jazzy will be having a new addition to his music empire any time soon?
