Marenikae’s ‘Deliverance’ is a Precursor to Her Impending EP ‘Acquired Taste’

Marenikae

Marenikae grew up around sound. With a theatre artist mother and record label owner dad, Marenikae’s trajectory in the music industry has not been random.

Inspired by the soul of the 90s and the revolutionary sound of the early 2000s which was heavily dominated by the avant-garde sounds of Styl plus and Mohits, Marenikae’s sound is a fusion of both the classic and the new.

On Marenikae’s latest drop Deliverance (Na So), she tells a story of evolution, change, and self-sufficiency. Ever the risk taker, she is comfortable switching between soundscapes and song palettes. Marenikae is sleek with the gaps in rhythm and committed to her delivery. Deliverance which is a prologue to her impending EP ‘Acquired Taste‘, is a personal tale that tackles social issues. It presents a conceptual subject that is stretchable and relatable at every turn.

“Deliverance is a narrative that every Nigerian can relate to. We all have experienced fuel scarcity, electricity fluctuations, insecurity etcetera in society but deliverance frames this with the added pressure of a partner who continues to make a difficult life even more difficult by being difficult. Clearly, someone who needs deliverance. It’s a commentary on the lack of emotional support systems that we Nigerians have access to”, Marenikae explained whiles speaking about her new song.

The video for Deliverance is a personal excursion into the artiste’s thoughts.

I wanted a strong performance video where I got to show off my personality and performance skills. I’ve done a lot of big videos in the past with lots of dancers and costumes and choreography, so I wanted something stripped down and simple but still very glam and artsy

Marenikae

The music video for Deliverance certainly evokes the glam of 90s classical music. Using bright colors, and shapes to set the tone. The recreation of old-school live bands gives viewers a nostalgic feeling from start to finish. Marenikae ticked all boxes.

Mareniake plans on releasing her aforementioned EP next year. In the meantime, she plans on releasing 2 new singles “As I be” and “Moolah” featuring Nigerian music icon Wande Coal.
