In this article, we talk about our best Ghanaian animated music videos of all time!
In a music industry where the value and impact of music videos is often underrated, it is always a breath of fresh air to see an animated music video. Animations are cool because they present an artiste with the opportunity to add an element of fantasy to their music, telling stories that could otherwise not be told. Some of our very favorite clips feature the work of extremely talented designers and illustrators, who craft a colorful world that dazzle our eyes while the music seduces our ears.
From Tic-tac’s “Philomena” to Jayso’s quite recent “Little Monsters”, we at Unorthodox Reviews have our own top ten list of the best Ghanaian animated videos ever – Read on! See if your favorite made the list!!
10. TicTac “Philomena”
This is one of the biggest hits of the early 2000s and is arguably the most popular hiplife song ever! I think it is also the first ever Ghanaian music video to employ the use of cartoon animations, I stand to be corrected. If you are a 90s kid there is no denying the cartoon caricatures from this video formed part of your fondest childhood memories.
9. Ruff N Smooth “Shaba”
This made the list because there are not so many animated videos to pick from in these parts. Although the animation is not so impressive, the song itself is a banger! Ruff and Smooth must be lauded for trying something new in such a monotonous industry.
8. Jeed Rogers “Tell ‘em’’
Jeed Rogers is not only a rapper but also a talented graphic designer with a special interest in animation. The video for his debut single ‘’Tell em’’ which features Mugeez of R2bees, sees him combining both passions, and I must say he does quite an impressive job. Popular Ghanaian actress Nadia Buari, who happens to be Jeed’s sister, also makes a cameo appearance in this video.
7. Lil Shaker ft Edi Young “I like it like that”
Another dope single from Lil’ Shaker called ‘I like It Like That’ off his LEVEL 100 album which was unfortunately never released. He features his then Skillions Records label mate Edi Young on this one. The video is very colorful, combining animated visual effects with real-life imagery.
6. Kojo Antwi “Dome Wu”
Although from an era where much attention was not given to music videos, Kojo Antwi has over the decades built a reputation of having some of the most creative Ghanaian music videos of all time. This video is no exception, it is probably the first-ever full-length cartoon music video ever produced in the country.
5. Dee Moneey ft Sarkodie “The Enigma”
This is another colorful video that combines real-life imagery with cool cartoon motion graphics. The video dazzles with color, bringing this hard-core hip hop song to life! Plaudits to Loui Cage Studios, makers of the popular “Nasr” cartoon series for the animation, not forgetting Dee Moneey who directs this video himself.
4. Chase “Fire”
The much-anticipated music video for Chase’s hit single “Fire” was shot and directed by David Nicol-Sey of North Productions. Aside from the cool concept which is totally in line with the lyrics of the song, the video features impressive cartoon animation, which makes periodic, yet smooth transitions to real-life imagery.
3. D-black ft Sarkodie “My kynda girl”
This video is the handwork of Nigerian animator, Jonathan Olamide. The animated video features Sarkodie, with movie stars, Nadia Buari, Jackie Appiah, Majid Michel, Yvonne Nelson, Juliet Ibrahim, Lydia Forson, Joselyn Dumas, and musicians, Reggie Rockstone, Dee Money, Eddie Blay and XO Senavoe also making appearances. Aside from the impressive animation, the video also makes a conscious effort to sell the Ghanaian entertainment industry to the world!
2. Jayso ft Sarkodie “Let ‘em know” & “Little Monsters”
The creativity and effort put in these videos inspired this article. “Let em know” a single off the Jayso/Sarkodie joint album, TMG (which was somehow never released), features a time travel theme. Whereas “Little Monsters” a single off Jayso’s latest album, MAKING TASHA PROUD parodies the “Men in Black” movie franchise.“Little Monsters” is apparently a spin-off to “Let em know”. With an innovative script, the animated figures in these videos keep the audience entertained.
1. Loonee TKR “1+1=3 Freestyle”
It is not easy to match up real-life imagery with animation. The cats at Clockwork Media, however, pull it off perfectly in this video. It doesn’t take a technical eye to see the immense effort and time invested. This video features some very dope motion graphics which is in complete sync with not only real-life imagery but the music itself. This is by far the dopest of the lot!
