Nigerian Reggae Icon Majek Fashek Confirmed Dead

The Rainmaker, Nigerian Reggae icon Majek Fashek passes on after battling with cancer aged 57.

Majek is reported to have passed on 11.45 pm June 1, 2020, Nigerian time in New York where he was previously receiving treatment. The year 2020 has seen the demise of a host of African music legends including the likes of Cameroon’s Manu Dibango, Nigeria’s Tony Allen, and most recently Guinean legend Mory Kante.

Majek Fashek’s manager Omenka Uzoma confirmed the sad news via an instagram post. He called on us to “celebrate his achievements, and not mourn.”

Majek Fashek – born Majekodunmi Fasheke – is best known for the 1988 album Prisoner of Conscience, which included the multiple award-winning single “Send Down the Rain” which earned him the alias The Rainmaker, he worked with various artists worldwide including Tracy Chapman, Jimmy Cliff, Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, and Beyoncé.
